the birth of Zephyr

So, because of the symphisis pubis dysfunction, having had a previous c-section, and the gestational diabetes which can often mean a big baby, I had a scheduled c-section on December 19th (39 weeks and 4 days) to welcome my second daughter. I was admitted at 11, and here is the fun part, I had gone into labor anyways. . My contractions were about 6 min apart for many hours. I liked that this meant my baby was certainly ready to be born and would likely not have respitory distress at birth, but not so stoked about the painful squeezing.

They put me in a gown. They took me to the recovery room. I got an IV, (it took 5 tries, I was really dehydrated from fasting. ) then they gave me fluids. I had an all female surgical team and had interviewed my doctor ahead of time and I really liked her. It took another 5-6 tries to do the spinal block but once it was in, wow. Medicine is pretty amazing. My nurse Jackie ( Nurse Jackie!!) was awesome. Joe came in and brought the flip cam. They kept offering to take the pictures for us and stuff but they didnt know we were doing video! Some cutting, some jiggling, and a very vernixy very angry little girl was pulled from me and vigorously rubbed for a bit before being placed on me. Her apgar was 8/9 and she was actively rooting as soon as they put her to me.

But a video is worth a million words, so watch here. But its LONG, graphic, and kinda boring. But the real gems; gore at 2:16. Awesome at 8:40 (there is blood!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tjNMbkE7LmQ&feature=youtu.be

After some cuddles they needed to fix me up. As I lay there ( Joe went to the nursery with the baby)the nurses asked me what I was saving the placenta for, and when I told them I would be consuming it, they didnt even pretend to politely act like that was cool, they were genuinely interested in it and asked lots of questions. After a long time of stitching me up I got wheeled back into recovery and eagerly awaited my baby. It seemed like a long time, but it might have been 20 minutes, as I sat there eating ice chips before Joe brought her to me. She was alert, calm, and went right to the breast.

It was an awesome experience. I was never scared, I was never suffering, I was never angry with myself for not being able to push out my baby. Choosing surgery was absolutely a wonderful way for me to heal my emotional wounds from my last unwanted c-section. Im so glad I did it. My baby and I had no ill effects. We went home after 48 hours. She has been healthy as a healthy baby could be, and I healed marevelously as well. Not all c-sections are awful. I couldnt be more gung ho about natural birth and parenting, but this was 100% the best route for me. Im so much happier and well adjusted this time because I had the choice.

Here is Z http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s1IYPguQQjA&feature=youtu.be

My oh my how the time does fly

I thought maybe I was a month behind, but no, Im nearly 3 months behind. What can I say? Life has been a whirlwind and Im exhausted a lot. Baby Z is nearly 35 weeks along now and is scheduled for delivery on December 22. She is measuring even larger than Lyra and is even more active than Lyra was as a fetus. I feel like a giant incubator, or a humongous egg. My hips were ok for awhile but are now bothering me again so Im glad I wont have to try a vaginal delivery, Im scared and worried that my hips will suffer permanent or at least long lasting damage trying to get a baby this size out. OUCH.

As per my last entry, I did end up enrolling Lyra in waldorf mommy and me classes and WE FRICKIN LOVE IT THERE AND WANT TO GO THERE FOREVER AND EVER. Its SO AMAZING. I love her teacher, the other moms are nice, the other kids are nice, we make hand made natural material crafts every week and eat wholesome food. Lyra LOVES school and I think there can be nothing better for a child than to love their school. I went to the Michelmas carnival and harvest faire the school puts on and we had so much fun. The prizes for the games were made from felted wools and wood, and acorns and handmade things. There was a petting zoo, there was organic food, and local handmade goods for sale. I did some early Christmas shopping and bought Lyra a hula hoop and some silk costume toys.

We also had out of town guests for 4 days, and a baby shower/halloween party to celebrate Z. It was a FANTASTIC weekend of family, friends, food, pinata, cake, etc. She loved Halloween and trick or treating but was so into the balloons one neighbor handed out, she forgot all about candy and didnt even notice when we gave it away to other trick or treaters. BALLOON for the win.

We left our Halloween decor up and added our Christmas tree to it. Im so excited because this year, Christmas ( Or Yule, really, since we are not Christian) means NEW BABY SISTER...so we made the tree match Z's colors ( purple and green) and are making some new ornaments in her honor. I even have some Sculpey to take her tiny newborn handprint when we come home from the hospital.

We have many plans in the coming weeks before a baby keeps us shut in for a month or two. We have turkey day, then the end of school for the semester, a trip to Monterey planned, and Yule dinner with our friends the weekend before Z comes. I hope Z doesnt plan on coming early. I havent packed a bag for her or put in the new car seat.

Lyra keeps asking when "shister" will get here. She is so excited and hugs and kisses my belly daily and tells the baby she loves her. We cant wait.

I know what you want though. Pics

Always playing catch-up

So, I feel like a jerk thinking its been forever since I last posted but its only been a few weeks.... I need to upload a megaton of pics. We had a blast in Monterey, Lyra is a champion traveler and hotel-er. But we opted not to go to Utah with Joe. It was hard without him but I think it would have been harder to go....

You see, my pelvis does not enjoy the extra work its having to do, and so Ive been ordered by the doctor to use a cane, a parking placard, and to wear a special belt around my hips. ( its uncomfortable and dorky) so that hopefully I can avoid worsening it before baby comes and will recover from birth easily.

Im having another girl. Yes we have picked a name. It begins with Z but its not Zoe or Zoey. We are very excited. Lyra likes to talk into my belly button to her baby sister. She says " I love my baby sister!" and she is always talking about how she is going to nurse when she comes out. We have bought Lyra a lifelike baby doll to change and care for.. She isnt so interested right now, but thats ok.

We are thinking of enrolling Lyra in Waldorf Mommy and Me classes once a week. We are going to try it out and see if we like it and if my hips can handle it. I need her to spend time with other kids and learn to share better. She loves other kids but she doesnt like them to touch her toys. I know this is just part of development.

We are going camping again next weekend. I look forward to it but dread the extra work it will be for me. Im hoping that it will be as easy as it can be. We dont have much time left before Z comes. Im nearly 6 months now, and everything is all ready so hard to do.

We will most likely be scheduling another c-section as its the easiest way for me to get this baby out with minimal pelvic damage, which means quicker recovery and healing. Im hoping for Dec 21st!!

Joe and I are happy and excited. Lyra brings us so much joy. We love where we live, and we love eachother. He takes good care of his girls.

So far behind...

So a MONTH ago, Lyra turned 2. I cant believe it has taken me until now to update. I feel like a jerk, but there have been many reasons I just couldnt. I only uploaded the pics from her birthday a week or so ago. Here they are on Flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/hunnyjoebunnydu/sets/72157626605274748/

Her birthday was a smash. The cupcakes went over very well. The kids had fun, the adults had fun. She made out like a bandit. She had her Big 2 pics taken at Sears too, and they are of course, adorable.

We had so MANY adventures. She started gymnastics and LOVES it. Whats not to love about a giant foam pit and multiple trampolines? We went camping and she loves it. She loves to hang out in our pop up camper and roll around on all the bedding. She is a camping champ. We have been swimming, having play dates, etc. She has gained 3 pounds in 6 months. She is up to size 7.5 shoes. In a little while she will be tall enough to ride the balance bike that daddy painted yellow for her. We went to Sausalito to the Childrens Discovery Museum and she was so excited she peed her pants. Like I said, its been a full month.

But its been hard for me, as I have been working through my first trimester this whole time. Im now a week into my second and feeling a lot better but still REALLY FREAKIN TIRED. We wont find out what were having until late July, and we are due in late December. We are ALL excited, and Lyra is all ready planning on holding the baby. She is going to be an awesome big sister.

But before any of that, there is more travelling to be done. This weekend we take off for 3 days in Monterey to celebrate our 5 years together. We are going to eat lots of fish and take Lyra to the aquarium and hopefully the beach. Then in 2 weeks we take off for 12 days in Salt Lake City UT. We will be on business, but Lyra loves to stay in hotels. It will be our first plane ride together and Im a bit apprehensive but it will be a short flight. We will get to visit friends and hopefully spend lots of time in the pool and seeing the sights.

Joe and I are both trying to make a concentrated effort to appreciate our time with Lyra before another baby comes along. And its paying off. She is such a loving, funny, sweet girl. Soon, we will have to talk preschools so she can spread her awesomeness all over the place...

slacker!!

Here are pics from our trip to Irvine. Theyre almost 2 months old now, but whaddaya want? http://www.flickr.com/photos/hunnyjoebunnydu/sets/72157626282034658/

I just typed out a 2 page long blog and it took me 45 minutes to write, and then google chrome crashed and it was gone. So you get bullets:

* Lyra turns 2 in a month. She is so verbal, so capable, and so mischevious. There is no such thing as baby proofing anymore, she can get into everything
*We planted a very small garden. Squash, sunflowers, mint, herbs. So far the herbs are not doing so well.
* Were planning a family camping tour with our new pop up camper. It goes on its maiden voyage to the Russian river this weekend and if all goes well, we will be taking it to the central coast in June and visiting the Monterey Bay aquarium for our 3 year anniversary.
*We are also planning for Lyra's 2nd birthday. We have lined up a fingerpaint mural, a tutu making station, and balloon animals. Im making rainbow cupcakes and also a gigantic cupcake. We hope to be able to get Lyra a blance bike and enroll her in weekly gymnastics lessons.

So, there ya go. My kid is amazing. We are happy people. I love spring!!

the days are just hurtling past us

In a little more than 2 months, my baby will be 2. I cant wrap my brain around that. I held a baby last week that is almost one year younger than Lyra and was the same size as she was last year. A year ago I had an infant. Now I have a potty trained kid that speaks in sentences and can feed herself. Its completely insane.

Feburary was a blur, and ended with our first week away from home. Joe had business in Irvine ( Southern California) so we went along for 8 days. We went to Disneyland, that was great. She doesnt know any Disney characters so we skipped the long lines to hug Mickey and all the souvenier shops and just went on the most benign of rides. The Bug's Life area was adorable. She enjoyed the carousel, and the safari jungle boat ride. We visited with Stina and Keba and their cute as heck kids. They were great Disney tour guides.

There was a mall near the hotel and it had a carousel too so we rode it almost every day. There was a ferris wheel too but the view of the smog made me sad. We ate far too much rich food but thats what vacations are for. It was nice for me to not have to clean dishes, cook, etc for a week. But I also didnt get any real breaks from being mom all week, either.

We went to a food truck event, which I guess is the hip thing to do down there. It was awesome, for 50 bucks we ate like kings and tried something from each of the 5 trucks. It was the best tasting food we had all week.

We visited a zoo, we met Brianna, we went to some playgrounds and parks, visited a children's science museum, rode rides, saw friends we havent seen in years, and got some much needed sunshine. Joe was a trooper and drove us all the way down there and all the way home, 7 hours each way. Lyra slept for 6 of the 7 hours on the way down and the way back up too. My old iPod video loaded with episodes of Mr. Rodgers Neighborhood really helped out with the travelling. But it was great to be home. While we were gone I paid for a friend to come clean the house, and it was a good call. Coming home to a clean home and fresh sheets I had put on the bed before leaving was heaven.

Lyra continues to be potty successful, but we did have a fair share of accidents on our trip. Just being out and about and being too busy playing will do that. She hasnt had another accident since we have been home.

Now that were home, I want to catch up on scrapbooking, get the garden ready for spring, and plan Lyra's 2nd birthday party. And get back on my Weight Watchers,.... or get pregnant again, we will see what happens.

So, I knows what you wants http://www.flickr.com/photos/hunnyjoebunnydu/

butts beads and birthdays

So, Its the end of January all ready. The year is 1/12 over.

Lets recap.
*I turned 32 on the 24th. We went to Morimoto in Napa for an opulent lunch. The trouble with fantastic food is that you cant get enough. I want to go back there for every meal for the rest of my life, but its not in the budget.

*Joe treated me to a day at the spa. With mixed results. I was not seen until I had waited nearly and hour. They compensated me with a free treatment, but Im not going back there. Still, it was nice.
* Lyra is 20 months now, speaking in sentences, ( "im going to get you!" and "Stoppit Daddy" are 2 favorites,) and is 99% diaper free. She just woke up from a 2.5 hour diaperless nap, and has been on several outings diaper free, no accidents. She even pulls pants on/off independently. She still wears diapers at night though.
We are still nursing, and some days its a real pain. But we are mostly nursing a lot less. She has a cold this week so we're back to on-demand. She is learning Chinese from some DVDs I bought her. They are not annoying, so yay for that. Also she went to grandmas house while I was getting a crown put on, and she didnt cry for me at all. That makes me think I might even go back to work!! I would love her to learn more Chinese from Grandma, and I wouldnt mind getting out of the house.

*I joined weight watchers and bought an iPhone so I could use the ww app. The Iphone is and old refurb, it was only 80$ I am also trying to conceive again, so we will see how long WW lasts. But I could drop some pounds while Im doing nothing. I really like it.
* I had a birthday bead party in conjunction with http://www.beadforlife.org/ a really fantastic fair trade program that gives women jobs they can do at home and provides funding for vocational schools, infrastructure, and financial independence to the people of Uganda. Run by women, supporting women. We raised about 400$.
*Jaime and Jesse, Ragani and Will came to the party. More pics Here http://www.flickr.com/photos/hunnyjoebunnydu/

Ive been a slacker.

So I know I skipped the 18 month blog and Im late on the 19month one. What can I say, its been a busy month or two with the holidays and all.

So, Lyra news. She can say anything. She knows so many words, people's names, etc that its pointless to list them now. She asks for people when theyre not around, and not just mommy or daddy but her grandparents, her friends, my friends, etc. When people come over she asks for them by name and they just melt. She has the sweetest little voice. She picks up the phone when its ringing and puts it to her ear and says "Ho" ( hello). She is learning shapes, colors, and can count to 3. Everything over three is also three. And most colors are green, if you ask her. But we got her color wonder markers and an easel and paper and we do a lot of sidewalk chalk and crayons. It seems like drawing is her favorite activity, as she will do it several times a day for 10-20 minutes at a time. She is super helpful around the house, and will sweep with her little broom and dustpan, or help me sort laundry piles. She is learning to sit nicely on the couch and call the cat to come sit with her and be petted. She gets upset when he leaves.

She still eats mostly cheese, crackers, and avocado but she has recently expanded to baked chicken fingers and fish sticks with ketchup. I wish she would eat more well rounded meals but all I can do is offer the stuff.

She is starting to try to stand on her head on the couch. She is actually really good at it. I cant wait until she is old enough for dance lessons or gymnastics. Speaking of, I have plans to go check out the local Montessori, which takes kids at age 2, and look into working there and enrolling Lyra when she is old enough. I may only work as a sub or very very part time, so that Lyra can spend more time with her Nene and hopefully learn more Mandarin. I also bought Lyra a set of 6 language immersion DVDS in Mandarin so that she can learn along with me, I certainly would like to know more than hello, thank you, no thank you, and goodbye.

We are sort of planning baby number 2. Im not regular with my cycles so its hard to tell when is the right time to make a baby, but Im also ok with just letting things happen naturally.

We had a lovely quiet holiday. Thanksgiving was a bit of a debacle with half the dinner guests getting the day confused and unable to make it for dinner ( we ate on Wednesday, not thursday) and Christmas was too wet and stormy for travelling. We had our Decemberween party and ate Indian food which is becoming tradition. For New Years day we had Hoppin John which is a Southern US traditional dish that is supposed to bring prosperity in the new year. We are more excited about PoPoa turning 90 in a few days and then Chinese New Year, ( Year of the Rabbit, YAY) in february.

We got more holiday cards this year than ever before, many from people I have never met in person and Im touched that a community of people who are "strangers" have been so warm and personable, moreso than some people in my day to day life. Our landlords and neighbors brought us holiday treats too, which was nice and unexpected. Im really feeling the community love these days.

Lyra is right now putting her purse over her shoulder and saying goodbye to us, walking down the hall, then coming back and saying hello. Too cute. Well anyways, here is what you really want,

There was so much October

October was the craziest month we have had since Lyra was born, no joke. We had big plans every single weekend. Birthday parties, 2 out of town weddings, a retirement party, Halloween, school, etc etc. We went to the Russian River, Soquel, the Beach Boardwalk. We wore costumes on several occassions, and slept in hotel beds, the back of a van, and a tent. Lyra took it all in stride and had a grand time, and Joe was a champion Daddy through it all.

Were in a major language explosion time. She will repeat nearly any word. She has trouble with R and she likes syllable words more than 2 syllable words, but boy, is it crazy. Im going to have to stop swearing so much. She will tell you her name is YAYA, and she said NyNy which means Grandma in Mandarin, which made Joe's mom freak out. And she loves, loves, LOVES to say POOP. She finally began to announce her pees and poops and can now answer you if you ask if she needs to go. Full on potty training is so close. The other night, she rolled over in her sleep, said Poop, and drifted back off. Its HILLARIOUS.

We have been having conversations! She is very direct most of the time and will say just what she needs. Milk, sleep, tyty ( tired) go, up, down, eat, cup, etc. Its amazing how much she can get across with just a few dozen words, but she is so proud when we get her. Its also so much better than whining and screaming.

She also got babystat for the first time ever, when I went to the dentist for a cleaning. Joe's mom came over to watch her, and although she wasnt happy to wake up from her nap and find me not there, she was ok. And more importantly, the next time she saw Nyny, she didnt cry, she asked Nyny to pick her up and hold her. So hopefully, Joe and I can go on some dates soon.

There were close to 250 pictures from this month including Pumpkin Patch, Halloween, her friends Nate and Sam, and a bunch more so be sure to go look at the Oct 2010 set on our flickr. http://www.flickr.com/photos/hunnyjoebunnydu/sets/72157625228858097/

Other big news is that Lyra is finally eating a decent amount of a variety of table food. She sampled many things in the past but pretty much only ate pasta and avocado. She has expanded to many fruits, tofu, soups, cream cheese, pommegranite seeds, and other things. Im proud to serve her wholesome food.

Gearing up for the Holidays, we have some parties to attend and some food to cook. She will be 18 mo. exactly on Thanksgiving Day, and Im doing the cooking over at my mother in laws house. Ive never cooked for them before. Im a little stressed about it.

Were planning on doing our holiday decorating soon and I have decided I want a goth tree. I want a black fake tree with skull and other goth element trimmings, and maybe a big bat on top in place of an angel. Im hoping to find Lyra a little goth Christmas stocking too...
